A studio comprised of ex-Monolith developers today announced Betrayer, an upcoming PC game set in almost all black and white. It will debut on Steam’s Early Access program on August 14, 2013.

Players will be immersed in the colonial times of 1604, somewhere on a Virginian coast. They’ll explore a land that has been devoid of color and encounter strange creatures and roaming ghosts betwixt the grasses and brushes of the land. With a selection of weaponry ranging from crossbows to musteks, they’ll chart the land in search of a solution to this mysterious landscape. On their way, they’ll also try to decipher what that damsel in red on yonder hill is about and why she keeps popping up and helping the player.

The developers’ new venture is called Blackpowder Games and is comprised of veterans who have worked on the original F.E.A.R. and No One Lives forever. In recent years, Monolith was also linked to titles like Gotham City Impostors, so there’s no shortage of shooter expertise. Betrayer is being produced via the Unreal Engine 3. A short announcement shows some of the two-tone visuals and tenebrous atmosphere.
